I've Been Planting

12/16/2024

Last week, I had a chance to see Wicked. I’ve always loved musicals, and Cynthia Erivo’s rendition of Defying Gravity was absolutely breathtaking. That moment at the end—the idea of breaking free from limits, of being unlimited—stayed with me long after I finished the movie.

It reminded me of a discovery I made just a few days earlier. I stumbled across a short film review I did back in 2019, something I had completely forgotten about. Watching my younger self, talk about storytelling and creativity felt like finding an old photo album. I started looking back at some of the other things I’ve done over the years: teaching, acting, singing, publishing research and creating content. I’ve worn so many hats, and somehow, each makes up a little piece of who I am today.

Growth Through Consistency

But for a long time, I wasn’t sure if any of what I'd done mattered because I couldn't see results. I am not the most consistent person, I would create content and disappear for months but I always came back because I love to create content and in my own little way this was some sort of consistency as well.

My Instagram felt stagnant and I stopped posting there. And I hadn't actively posted on Facebook and Twitter in years. So I shifted all my attention to Tiktok. . On a whim, I began posting my Tiktok videos on Instagram, and they took off.

Over the past few months, my journey as a creator has undergone a season of incredible growth. My Instagram grew from 4k followers in September to over 14k today, after years of wondering why my content wasn’t gaining traction.

That small pivot reminded me never to give up on a platform—or a dream—because success can come from the most unexpected places. Some videos flop on one platform and soar on another, and even my long-abandoned Facebook and Twitter accounts are growing again.

What’s the lesson here?

Keep showing up.

Every little thing you do, every dream you pursue, even if it feels forgotten or insignificant, is planting seeds. You don’t always know when they will grow, but trust that they will.

Building a Creative Life

In this season of rediscovery, I’ve been asking myself: What do I still want to do?

The answer is simple—everything. Every genuine dream I’ve ever had. I want to play a leading role in a movie. I want to write a book. I want to start an online business and just keep pushing boundaries and pursuing what makes me feel alive.

It’s easy to feel like time is running out or that certain dreams are too far gone. But I believe that if we’re alive, there’s always room for more.

A Word for Creatives

Here’s something I’ve learned along the way:

Nobody owes you anything—not your family, not your friends, not even your audience. In my early content creation days, I used to get upset when people in my life wouldn’t repost or share my content as much as they did others or even at all. But I realised eventually that it was pointless. The sooner you let go of expectations, the sooner you can focus on proving your worth, not to others, but to yourself.

You have to believe in your own potential before anyone else will. And once you do, you’ll be unstoppable.

Closing Thoughts

This week, I want to remind you about how much we can grow when we simply don’t give up. Careers, projects, and dreams; all have their seasons. What matters is that you stay ready, keep creating, and trust that every effort you make has a purpose.

So, what’s one dream you’re ready to dust off and pursue? I’d love to hear about it. Leave me a message here.

Warmly,

Oyinda.

P.S. I’ve been listening to Atomic Habits (audiobook version) lately, and it’s a game-changer. Small changes truly do create big results over time. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it!
